Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Miami about 15 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is challenging.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Used to live on the Riverside side, now on the Old Town side. Completely different vibe. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 4 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
