What West Sacramento does better than anywhere else
Hey folks, I've been here for 4 years and Average temperature is around 61--F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 3.5%, which is pretty low. You can expect to pay around $1,568 for rent here. Rent is about $1,568/month for a decent place. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Let me know your thoughts. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in consulting. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely decent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (The Heights) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Dating scene is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Used to live on the North side, now on the Cedar Grove side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Sunset. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Thai.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 37, moved here 9 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Riverside and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is dating scene. Other than that, Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
