OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Springfield. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.
Hope this helps!.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Miami it's pretty good.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely tough and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (East) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Raleigh about 11 years ago. The main reasons were family and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is tough.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely excellent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Highland) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Bugs and humidity in summer.
