First post here. My family moved here when I was a kid. Poverty rate is 6.2%, which is pretty low. It's a a smaller city city with about 53,082 people. Household incomes average around $75,905 in Westchester. Rent is about $1,734/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 1 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Nashville it's excellent.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a pharmacist, 37, moved here 6 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Eastside and West, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Rising rent and home prices
3. The nightlife situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- West: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$80K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

I've been here 12 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Fairview) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Highland. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Hope this helps!.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Came here for school and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a writer who relocated here from Minneapolis about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are competitive, gas is challenging.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Miami about 9 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good internet infrastructure
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are manageable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely worth checking out..
