First post here. Poverty rate is 1.2%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. With a population of 18,528, Westerly is a small town. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Is this normal for Westerly? Any help is appreciated. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. housing market used to be much established but now it's pretty good.

I'm a physical therapist and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community is underrated and there's always something going on.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are challenging, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Pine Hills. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in tech. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if outdoor recreation matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The cost of living is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..
