Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Atlanta about 13 years ago. The main reasons were family and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Downtown. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in real estate. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been living here for 10 years and I'd say it's not perfect but it works for me. The public transit is solid compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is cultural scene. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 14 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Phoenix about 8 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is average.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Good luck with whatever you decide..
