What I wish I knew before living in Western Springs

First post here. I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Crime rate is something to consider -Western Springs sits at 22.3 per 100K. Poverty rate is 1.5%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $691,300 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Am I overthinking this? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Moved here from Atlanta about 11 years ago. I have mixed feelings honestly. Still getting used to pet-friendliness but Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is safety. it's exactly what I was looking for. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 2 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

We moved here with our family and it exceeded my expectations. Schools in South area are average. Kids love it here.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Miami about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Lots of new development happening
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Property taxes are high

Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a teacher, 50, moved here 9 years ago from Miami. I've lived in Midtown and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Affordable housing options
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited shopping options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The dating scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for remote workers. decent vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Miami, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$150K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
