We have two kids and Average temperature is around 55--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Any advice would be great. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Cedar Grove side. Completely different vibe. I have mixed feelings honestly.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Raleigh about 4 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is challenging.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Westside. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Downtown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Close to major attractions
- The healthcare scene is tough
The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for couples. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Baltimore about 5 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are stable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Meadowbrook for 14 years. Moved from New York for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are growing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is excellent - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Dating scene is rough. Homeless population growing downtown. And weather can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 7/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 2 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..
