I've been living here for 13 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor recreation is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Eastside. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in government. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely decent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Homeless population growing downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 36, moved here 7 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in North and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The housing market situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for remote workers. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $80K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely challenging and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (The Heights) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

The food scene here is solid. Tons of great Mexican places. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- The school system scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited entertainment options

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
