Cost of living reality check -Westland

Alright, Homes are going for about $176,500 on average. It's a a smaller city city with about 84,155 people. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Would love some local perspective. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 51, moved here 10 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in Old Town and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Good internet infrastructure
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The public transit situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $80K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
