First post here. Military spouse here. The median home value here is around $820,000, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $820,000 on average. Rent is about $2,100/month for a decent place. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. What do you all think? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I genuinely enjoy living here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 3 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been here 7 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in The Heights. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in finance. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Seattle about 6 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (West) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
