What surprised you most about Wheaton?

Anyone else feel this way? My partner and I are With a population of 53,453, Wheaton is a smaller city. Household incomes average around $119,566 in Wheaton. Crime rate is something to consider -Wheaton sits at 82.8 per 100K. Homes are going for about $447,700 on average. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Pros:
- Good schools
- Walkable downtown
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Boring for young people
- Far from major airports
The city has invested a lot in new development. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 13 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Lakewood side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely challenging and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (East) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Greenfield for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- The cultural scene scene is decent

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for families. Hope this helps!.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 29, moved here 1 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Sunset and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Four distinct seasons
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The housing market situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely improving and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

I've lived in Midtown for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Decent public transit for the size
- The housing market scene is solid

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Road conditions need improvement

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Came here for cost of living and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The walkability is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.
