What surprised you most about Wheeling?

Anyone else feel this way? I relocated for work and Rent is about $1,578/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 6.9%, which is pretty low. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What would you do? TIA!

I've lived in Oak Park for about 1 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- The housing market scene is challenging

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homeless population growing downtown

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in West for 3 years. Moved from Denver for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2018 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. West schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Dating scene is rough. And nightlife can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 9/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

My experience has been mostly positive. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

I've been living here for 9 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor recreation is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..
