What I wish I knew before living in White Oak

Been living here since 2018. Rent is about $942/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -White Oak sits at 204.5 per 100K. Median household income is $71,789, which feels about average for the area. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 2 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is decent.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

We moved here with our family and it was the best decision I ever made. Schools in Cedar Grove area are decent. Kids love it here.
