Life in White Plains as a young professional

The median home value here is around $624,100, which is pretty steep. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. It's a a smaller city city with about 59,818 people. Poverty rate is 7.5%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $115,586, which feels pretty solid for the area. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Friendly people
- Low taxes

Cons:
- Traffic can be terrible
- High property taxes
- Lack of diversity
What neighborhoods would you suggest? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 9 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Minneapolis about 11 years ago. The main reasons were family and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is underrated.

Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
