We have two kids and Household incomes average around $87,059 in White Sands. Average temperature is around 63--F, so the weather is moderate. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Should I be concerned? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Austin about 2 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. No regrets on my end..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 13 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into running, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Pine Hills side vs the The Heights side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Downtown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- The housing market scene is average
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Happy to answer more specific questions..

My experience has been mostly positive. it exceeded my expectations. The only thing I'd watch out for is walkability. Other than that, Good luck with whatever you decide..
