Random thought, We're a young couple and Rent is about $1,447/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 67--F, so the weather is moderate. The unemployment rate is 6.1%, which is concerning. Homes are going for about $216,000 on average. It's a a small town city with about 8,794 people. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Would love some local perspective. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want housing market, then yeah this place is great. But if traffic matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I work in tech here and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The job market for my field is decent. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Old Town) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to Boston it's average.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Old Town. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
