Worst things about Whittier nobody talks about

Anyone else feel this way? Military spouse here. Rent is about $1,829/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $751,700 on average. It's a a smaller city city with about 85,925 people. Household incomes average around $92,374 in Whittier. Crime rate is something to consider -Whittier sits at 247.2 per 100K. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Diverse community
- Strong sense of community
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Limited dining options
- High property taxes
- Far from major airports
What would you do? Thanks for reading. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'm a software engineer and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. The community is hit or miss and there's always something going on.

Bought a house here in 2024 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Oak Park for 10 years. Moved from LA for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is tough - we have national forests within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are underrated. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Chain restaurants dominate. And cost of living can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.
