Relocating to Wichita Falls, TX -pros and cons?

Hi all, I grew up here but left for a while. The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 12.0%, which is around average. Rent is about $978/month for a decent place. Average temperature is around 68--F, so the weather is moderate. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. Is this normal for Wichita Falls? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

The food scene here is underrated. Tons of great BBQ places. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely improving and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Sunset) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for school and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The community vibe is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Chicago about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Hot take but it's exactly what I was looking for. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.
