OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in consulting. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to LA it's pretty good.

I've been in Springfield for 3 years. Moved from Denver for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
retail is strong here. education is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Springfield schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And food scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Austin about 5 years ago. The main reasons were family and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Nightlife is limited
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Hope this helps!.
