Is Wichita still affordable?

Random thought, Military spouse here. Median household income is $63,072, which feels about average for the area. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Came here for work and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The school system is honestly surprisingly good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Chicago about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are manageable, gas is challenging.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. No regrets on my end..

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great Thai places. it's exactly what I was looking for.

As someone who grew up here, the quality of life is solid. A lot has changed in the past few years though. traffic used to be much pricey but now it's excellent.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely improving and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.

I've been here 5 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is average.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to Houston it's improving.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want housing market, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much affordable but now it's hit or miss.
