Is public transit usable in Williamsburg?

Hey folks, Median household income is $32,431, which feels on the lower side for the area. The unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is pretty low. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. Would love some local perspective. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 5 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in education. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in The Heights. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally improving. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Old Town) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 42, moved here 15 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Riverside and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The pet-friendliness situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for retirees. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Worth doing your research before committing.
