Day-to-day life in Wilmette, IL

Hey everyone, You can expect to pay around $1,968 for rent here. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Thanks for reading. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 58, moved here 5 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Eastside and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The food scene situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely challenging and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (North) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Old Town. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Thai.

Definitely worth checking out..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in Uptown for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of new development happening
- The healthcare scene is average

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Limited shopping options

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Indian.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Fairview. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely tough and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Springfield) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
