Moving from Chicago to Wilmington next month

First post here. I work in legal and You can expect to pay around $1,311 for rent here. Poverty rate is 8.9%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $350,300, which seems about average. Crime rate is something to consider — Wilmington sits at 608.4 per 100K. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Anyone in a similar situation? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The weather takes some getting used to.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Phoenix it's underrated.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in The Heights for 2 years. Moved from Tampa for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2015 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Homeless population growing downtown. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a nurse who relocated here from Denver about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are established, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 52, moved here 6 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Springfield and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Limited shopping options
3. The healthcare situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $40K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it was the best decision I ever made. No regrets on my end..
