Raising a family in Wilmington — thoughts?

Longtime lurker here, Just moved here 3 months ago and Median household income is $63,900, which feels about average for the area. The median home value here is around $350,300, which seems about average. The unemployment rate is 3.0%, which is pretty low. It's a a mid-size city city with about 119K people. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Baltimore about 1 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Lots of new development happening
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Cedar Grove. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in government. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Meadowbrook for 14 years. Moved from Miami for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
legal is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is decent - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Meadowbrook schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Not a lot of cultural diversity. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 5/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The weather is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in The Heights area are tough. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 12 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
