Hey folks, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Median household income is $49,190, which feels on the lower side for the area. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I overthinking this?

I've been living here for 15 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor recreation is pretty good compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2018 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

I'm a sales manager and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is hit or miss and there's always something going on.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely better than expected and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Downtown) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- The healthcare scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
