Been meaning to ask this. I'm a college student here and Rent is about $1,411/month for a decent place. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Miami about 8 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
