Is public transit usable in Winston-Salem?

Hey everyone, I'm a 41-year-old HR manager and It's a a mid-size city city with about 251K people. Rent is about $1,033/month for a decent place. With a population of 251K, Winston-Salem is a mid-size city. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. What are your go-to spots? TIA! Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the Maple Ridge side. Completely different vibe. it exceeded my expectations.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 30, moved here 13 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Westside and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Can feel isolated
3. The nightlife situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
