Is Winston-Salem a good place to retire?

My wife and I are planning to retire in the next few years. We're considering Winston-Salem because of the weather. Weather is moderate — about 60F average.

Cost of living looks pretty reasonable. How's the healthcare situation? Any retiree communities?

I've lived in Old Town for 4 years and it's decent, has its pros and cons.

Downtown is overrated and overpriced. The suburbs offer way better value.

Coming from LA, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are slightly more expensive but housing makes up for it.

Rent tip: look for places in winter. Prices drop and there's more availability.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Highland Park. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 5 years and my experience is very similar.

I'd add that the parks here are amazing for families. Otherwise spot on!

I'd add that healthcare options are better than most cities this size. Otherwise spot on!

Public transit needs work but they're investing in it. Should improve in next few years.

The food scene here is seriously underrated. So many great restaurants.

If you can afford it, Pine Grove is the best place to live. Period.

Check out the Riverside area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

I've lived in Lakewood for 1 years and it's still one of the best decisions I made.

The job market has been improving lately. Several government companies moved in recently.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Highland Park and Southside are perfectly safe.
