Been meaning to ask this. I work in food service and The median home value here is around $208,200, which is actually reasonable. The unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is pretty low. With a population of 251K, Winston-Salem is a mid-size city. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Does this match your experience? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely decent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Eastside) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Oak Park. It's underrated for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
