My family moved here when I was a kid. Homes are going for about $221,200 on average. It's a a small town city with about 12,761 people. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. What would you do?

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I've lived in Downtown for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from LA, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The dating scene scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. it exceeded my expectations. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Baltimore about 3 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is underrated.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Hope this helps!.
