Hey folks, Poverty rate is 5.8%, which is pretty low. The weather takes some getting used to. Any advice would be great. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

I work in real estate here and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The job market for my field is underrated. Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely tough and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Sunset) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in real estate. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Happy to answer more specific questions..
