Living in Yakima -the reality

I grew up here but left for a while. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. You can expect to pay around $1,075 for rent here. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Am I overthinking this? There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 15 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've lived in West for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by weather. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
- The walkability scene is surprisingly good

The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want walkability, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is dating scene. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.
