Moving to Yakima -what should I know?

With a population of 96,810, Yakima is a smaller city. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. What do you all think?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 6 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

I work in real estate here and it's exactly what I was looking for. The job market for my field is tough. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Westside for 3 years. Moved from Charlotte for my partner's job. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
government is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Westside schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Not a lot of cultural diversity. Limited entertainment options. And traffic can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 6/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is healthcare. I have mixed feelings honestly. Worth doing your research before committing.

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are improving, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is nightlife. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

The food scene here is underrated. Tons of great Southern places. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Pittsburgh and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Westside. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Thai.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The outdoor recreation is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..
