Is Yankton worth it salary-wise?

Hi all, You can expect to pay around $780 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 1.2%, which is pretty low. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Boston about 6 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is challenging.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a lawyer, 39, moved here 3 years ago from Houston. I've lived in The Heights and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The dating scene situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for remote workers. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
