Random thought, I'm single, late 50s, and The unemployment rate is 6.8%, which is concerning. Median household income is $28,722, which feels on the lower side for the area. The suburbs are where most families end up. Anyone in a similar situation? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 15 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely challenging and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Public transit is excellent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it exceeded my expectations.

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- The community vibe scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Charlotte about 14 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is improving.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
