Anyone else love living in York?

Hi all, I'm a remote worker and The median home value here is around $170,900, which is actually reasonable. Homes are going for about $170,900 on average. Rent is about $887/month for a decent place. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Am I overthinking this? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. nightlife used to be much stable but now it's solid.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 30, moved here 14 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in Meadowbrook and South, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Growing food and restaurant scene
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The outdoor recreation situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Meadowbrook: Great for couples. tough vibes, walkable.
- South: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $60K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely better than expected and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (East) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Fairview area are tough. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 12 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Definitely worth checking out..

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.
