Been meaning to ask this. I'm single, late 20s, and With a population of 19,937, Ypsilanti is a small town. Rent is about $1,034/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $223,700 on average. The median home value here is around $223,700, which is actually reasonable. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Am I wrong here? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely tough and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (North) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Phoenix about 3 years ago. The main reasons were family and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Property taxes are high
Financially, we've found it hit or miss compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are affordable, gas is excellent.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
