Poverty rate is 19.7%, which is higher than I expected. The weather takes some getting used to. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a pharmacist, 51, moved here 14 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Old Town and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is average.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is improving.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. No regrets on my end..

I've lived in East for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from San Diego, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good internet infrastructure
- The safety scene is solid
The downsides:
- Road conditions need improvement
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
