I'm a remote worker and With a population of 19,937, Ypsilanti is a small town. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. What do you all think? The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Charlotte and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Riverside. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in finance. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely tough and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. healthcare is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..
