Hi all, I'm retired and Homes are going for about $278,200 on average. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. Worth the trade-offs? Appreciate any input.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely decent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Downtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a electrician and I've found it exceeded my expectations. The community is surprisingly good and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Oak Park. It's pretty good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in finance. If you're in marketing you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like seafood.
No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Sunset for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The walkability scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

I work in construction here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is hit or miss. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
