Quick question about Zachary

First post here. Rent is about $1,440/month for a decent place. Median household income is $90,507, which feels pretty solid for the area. With a population of 19,637, Zachary is a small town. Poverty rate is 5.0%, which is pretty low. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. Let me know your thoughts. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The city has invested a lot in new development. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Greenfield. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Highland for 12 years. Moved from Phoenix for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Can feel isolated. And public transit can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 5/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Minneapolis, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good healthcare facilities
- The cost of living scene is tough

The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Property taxes are high

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Used to live on the The Heights side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

I've been living here for 11 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The nightlife is underrated compared to other places I've lived. Overall Definitely worth checking out..

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Came here for cost of living and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The outdoor recreation is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
