Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 10 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Miami about 9 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and family.

Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.

Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Hope this helps!.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Eastside area are decent. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely underrated and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Midtown) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Downtown for 12 years. Moved from Minneapolis for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is tough. We bought in 2019 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
finance is strong here. government is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are competitive for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is tough - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Downtown schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Limited entertainment options. And cultural scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 5/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a physical therapist, 54, moved here 14 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in North and Springfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The weather situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for retirees. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Springfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Pittsburgh it's challenging.
