Moving to Albany — what should I know?

I got a job offer in Albany, NY and I'm seriously considering the move. I'm coming from a small city. A few questions:

1. Which neighborhoods should I look at for a $900-1400 budget?
2. How's the commute situation?
3. Is the crime as bad as the stats suggest?
4. Any hidden costs I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

Check out the Eastside area. Way more affordable and still close to everything.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 12 years and my experience is very similar.

For families, I'd recommend looking at University District. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

Traffic is the worst part honestly. But if you live near work it's fine.

Coming from Houston, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are slightly more expensive but housing makes up for it.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

Can confirm the safety issue. But it really depends on the neighborhood. Northside and Riverside are perfectly safe.

I've lived in Lakewood for 3 years and it's still one of the best decisions I made.
