Raising a family in Albany -thoughts?

Hey folks, Been living here since 2009. Household incomes average around $59,485 in Albany. Homes are going for about $223,000 on average. Rent is about $1,178/month for a decent place. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Pros:
- Friendly people
- Diverse community
- Walkable downtown
- Good internet infrastructure

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Cold winters
- Limited nightlife
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Not enough green space
What neighborhoods would you suggest? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I'm a social worker and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. The community is better than expected and there's always something going on.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (East) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Old Town) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

We moved here with our family and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Schools in Lakewood area are improving. Kids love it here.
