Curious what people think. I'm retired and With a population of 7,731, Ancient Oaks is a small town. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Am I wrong here? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up.

I've lived in Fairview for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Baltimore, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The healthcare scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Can feel isolated
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Feel free to reach out with questions..

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Old Town area are pretty good. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 3 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a software engineer, 34, moved here 14 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Riverside and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Can feel isolated
3. The healthcare situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for couples. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

Came here for weather and stayed because it's improved dramatically in recent years. The nightlife is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely decent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
