My experience has been mostly positive. it was the best decision I ever made. The only thing I'd watch out for is cultural scene. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been in Downtown for 4 years. Moved from Miami for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is average. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
construction is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Downtown schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Property taxes are high. And housing market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

Background: I'm a software engineer, 47, moved here 1 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in East and Cedar Grove, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The food scene situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**

- Cedar Grove: More affordable, family-friendly.

I've lived in Greenfield for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- The public transit scene is improving
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Raleigh about 6 years ago. The main reasons were weather and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are stable, gas is solid.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
