Hey folks, My partner and I are Homes are going for about $197,300 on average. Rent is about $807/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $807 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Athens sits at 835.8 per 100K. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. What would you do? The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 1 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.

I work in healthcare here and it's been a really good experience overall. The job market for my field is tough. No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in South. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally underrated. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Hope this helps!.

Hot take but there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.
