Most overrated things about Athens

Random thought, Just moved here 2 months ago and Household incomes average around $53,151 in Athens. What neighborhoods would you suggest?

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem challenging.

I've been here 9 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

As someone who grew up here, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much growing but now it's improving.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is traffic. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a nurse, 35, moved here 1 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in Oak Park and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Good healthcare facilities
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The safety situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt pretty good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

The food scene here is excellent. Tons of great Asian places. I genuinely enjoy living here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in retail. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Old Town for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The pet-friendliness scene is solid

The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Happy to answer more specific questions..

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Highland area are pretty good. Kids love it here.
