OK so I'm single, late 20s, and With a population of 14,250, Athens is a small town. You can expect to pay around $807 for rent here. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. TIA! Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Dallas, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Decent public transit for the size
- The safety scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Chain restaurants dominate

I've been in East for 4 years. Moved from Portland for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is solid - we have lakes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
